Well, that sucked.  With the horrible week I have had with back and hips, which I got fixed yesterday, I almost pulled out of this race due to body just not working.  But saw a new chiro, son of chiro I usually go to, and he fixed me up pretty good yesterday.  Haven't felt this good in a long time.  So I decided to go ahead and run and see what happened.  Went with trying to maintain around a 6 min pace for as long as possible.  At around mile 7 the wheels fell off the bus.  All energy in my legs left, and then the 20 mph headwind started for a big pile of miles.  I guess not running much for 2 months tends to lose some endurance.  I thought about DNF'ing a few times down the canyon, but figured I'd just keep going to experience a great blowup.  And it just kept getting worse.  Sour stomach for a few miles, leg cramping the last four.  Walked a bunch the last four.  I think at mile 22 or so I was still holding onto a sub 3 hour pace, but when the leg cramps started I threw that out the window, and just didn't have the energy to maintain a 6:51 pace anyways.  Really glad it is over.  I'll have to check the splits and HR later.

From Dan Varga on Sat, Jun 09, 2012 at 15:29:57 from 174.27.227.53

Thanks for the heads up about my time Julie, guess I was a little out of it still.

From Fritz on Sat, Jun 09, 2012 at 16:03:38 from 65.100.192.74

Nice job sticking it out. "I thought about DNF'ing a few times down the canyon, but figured I'd just keep going to experience a great blowup." Great line. We all live to race another day.

From Kelli on Sat, Jun 09, 2012 at 16:40:05 from 67.172.235.55

Sorry for the bummer race. Hope the legs are ok! We all know how fast you are, just a bad day. TAKE CARE.

From Kam on Sat, Jun 09, 2012 at 19:35:03 from 65.130.19.178

We must have been leapfrogging to the finish. I was the walking man with the sign on my back. You probably smacked me once or twice.

That can play with you when the week leading up is not optimal. Tough day, take care of yourself for the next!

Hat's off to you for doing what you could for this race under difficult conditions. I've ran a good portion of miles with you and know what a healthy Dan is capable of. Let's get this body of yours all healed up and ready to have a good summer and fall of running.

From JPark on Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 17:17:34 from 174.52.34.169

Sorry for the tough day. Hopefully you can stay healthy and have consistent training and put up the performances we all know you're capable of.

From Dan Varga on Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 18:05:24 from 174.27.227.53

Thanks everyone. Now I'm hoping I don't have a stress fracture in my foot. I guess when it rains the wind blows.

From Chad Robinson on Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 23:42:36 from 65.130.117.26

Sorry for the tough day Dan. I am impressed that you finished it out. I hope your body will decide to heal one of these days, you definitely deserve it.

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 10:08:08 from 155.100.226.54

Sorry to hear it didn't go anywhere near as planned, or what you were capable of running, but that's how these things go sometimes. Way to hang in there and finish the race... that takes some mental toughness. You'll get another chance before you know it.

From Brandon on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 14:22:58 from 67.214.231.170

You have a warrior spirit Dan. The line about experiencing a great blowup is awesome. Way to finish it out. Can't wait to see you run a smoking marathon this fall. Recover and heal up well!

From Andrea on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 14:40:38 from 72.37.171.52

Well, sounds like you got to experience the great blowup. Hope it never happens again! This is a good motivator for redemption :)
